Win yourself some Deer Creek Goodness

Apr 14, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Raffle Prizes, Spey Nation Supporters  //  Comments Off on Win yourself some Deer Creek Goodness

Temple Fork Outfitters returns to Spey Nation VIII with a full line of Spey and Switch Rods.   They also have some great spey sized reels to show you as well.  Come check out the new lines and talk to the rep on July 27, 2015.  They are also supporting the Nation in a big way offering up a Deer Creek Spey Rod.

Two handed rod designers Mike Kinney and Bob Meiser continue to expand the TFO Deer Creek series of fly rods with the introduction of the Deer Creek Switch Rod Series.

Bob Meiser has been in the forefront of popularizing and refining blank designs for the Switch Rod concept of fly rods since the mid 1990s. His expertise with this unique family of rods is well established within the two handed rod community. Bob’s original concept has been universally accepted over the past decade and teaming with Mike Kinney in design and application for these rods has now taken the concept to the next higher level. We have used our proprietary Axiom material lay-up process for these blanks. These are extremely light weight, durable, thoughtfully designed fly rods with superb performance … Best defined simply as: “Totally efficient delivery tools.”

Last year the Tailwater Lodge located on the banks of the Salmon River in Altmar, NY (On the grounds of the old elementary school) started a partnership with Spey Nation where they will be providing the lunch, and the meeting room space to host the International Fly Fishing Film Festival.    This year they have stepped up again lending support wherever necessary in logistics, lunch, meeting room space for the IF4 again and giving you the opportunity to sample the cuisine at their great restaurant in the lodge.  Come to Spey Nation and have a chance to win one of 2 $50 gift certificates courtesy of the Tailwater Lodge.  And don’t forget to make your reservation with them for the weekend and come to the IF4!

Shortly before one of our Spey Nation gatherings a few years ago, Carl from Mad River Dubbing stopped by the Fox Hollow Lodge and dropped off a big box of shiny flash and fluff to give away to one lucky fly tier.   He hasn’t missed an event since and it has become a real ticket magnet.

The Echo Glass 2 handers may be the most anticipated rods at Spey Nation and thanks to Nick and the boys over at the Oak Orchard Fly Shop, you may be walking home with one.  If you’re really lucky, I mean “Keith Lucky” then you may win a matching reel to hang on the bottom of the rod.

Check out the following review that Nick Pionessa wrote about the new Echo Glass 2 handers.

Confession time- I don’t fish a lot of $280 switch rods. I know it’s hard to believe but there it is. I have access to some of the world’s best fly fishing gear. Because I’ve taken the vow of poverty they allow me to purchase the expensive ones more reasonably. You wouldn’t be fishing inexpensive rods either. That said there is one that I will be using regularly and that’s the new Echo Glass Switch.

Let’s forget about the whole glass thing for a minute. This is a great rod period. Light in hand, loads easily, plenty of power and plays fish amazingly well. The fact that it’s glass never had anything to do with my fishing experience. That fact that it’s a well designed and built rod had everything to do with it.

I was fortunate enough to get the feel of a fish on it pretty quickly on its maiden voyage. A small but feisty steelhead was the first to play. Since I basically hooked it out from under a log jam I had to put the screws to it right off. Got her out of the wood and eventually to the bank and then remembered the rod when I was tailing her. That’s a good thing. It performed like it should when I needed it to. Glass or graphite, rods need to perform without worry.

The weather was blustery to say the least that day and with the spring conditions I was using a 10’ sink tip and a weighted tube streamer most of the day. The line I had on the 11’ 7 wt was the old Airflo NW Skagit. 30’ at 440 grains and a long gradual taper. One of my favorite lines and from some past glass switch experience, a good choice for glass. Yeah, Skagit heads used to be 30’. Throw on the 10’ tip and you have 40’ to move with an 11’ rod. Never a problem even in the howling wind. That was to be the real test of this rod and it not only passed, it was such a non issue I never had to think about it all day. Don’t think, just fish. That’s what I want out of my rod. At any price and made of any material.

Doubled to the cork on the best fish of the day in some fast water I had Power to turn and cushion to keep us connected. What I’ve always loved about my small, glass trout rods is now readily available at a reasonable cost for Switches and Speys.

Thanks Echo!

Feb 20, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Supporters  //  Comments Off on Vision and Reelflies Joins Spey Nation 2015

They haven’t been able to make an appearance every year but they are always a hit when they make it to the water.  Vision in Fly Fishing  always has an innovative and large array of 2 handed fly rods available to us and this year will be no exception when Mike Wencel, the Eastern Canada Vision and Reelflies.ca rep joins us.  You will also be able to talk to Mike about giving you a one on one casting demo with the full line of Vision products.

Don’t know much about the Vision stuff?  You probably should.  With names like “Cult” and “Catapult” you might just want to spend a bit of your day over at Mikes booth talking to him about what this Swedish Company has to offer.

Also appearing in Mike’s booth will be Reel Flies.  A Canadian Company with a full array of Atlantic Salmon and Steelhead flies.
