Tom Larimer unable to attend

Jul 2, 2013   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Presenter  //  Comments Off on Tom Larimer unable to attend

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Tom Larimer will not be able to attend Spey Nation VI.  Hopefully schedules will be such that he can attend in the future.  I was looking forward to showing him what we have built out our way.  But “If you build it, they will come”  Eric Reed is on stand by and ready to enlighten us on the saltwater applications of the 2 hander.  Let me tell you, a short time with Eric will convince you that there are many.  Last year, Beulah/Bauer/Watermaster Rep Eric Reed gave a riveting presentation on casting a 2 hander overhead for distance and stripers.   (That’s one P for Stripers…the fish)  If you happened to miss it or you are attending for the first time, this one is not to be missed.
I can’t wait to see it again.

He will give his talk at 2pm.

Eric Reed…in his own words:  I am a: photographer, father, outdoorsman, camper, scientist, tall, tattooed, fly fishing sales rep. with a love for music and travel. I try to take the time to smell the roses and snap a photo or video of them as well. I am trying to show the places and things that I encounter during my blessed life.

My focus for both Spey instruction and fly line design has always been on helping students become versatile and efficient anglers. After 15 years of instructing Spey casting and designing products, I have developed a teaching style that installs sound principles and proper technique. I guarantee you will walk away with the tools to become a better angler!

Skagit Master 4 Out Now…GL’s Get Some Swinger Love

Return home with full time steelhead guide Tom Larimer to fish with a few of the guys who “Cracked the Code” on swinging flies for steelhead in the midwest. Soul-roller Dave Pinczkowski, close friend Jay Niederstadt, and veteran guides Jeff Hubbard and Greg Senyo spend long days fishing with Tom on their home rivers. Urban streams surrounded by a sprawling metropolis, wilderness spring creeks, large tail water rivers, and slate bottom spate rivers, all suffering the lowest flows since 1944, present a mountain of challenges for the anglers.

Skagit Master Volume 4 presents concepts used in the first 3 Skagit Master DVDs and applies them to these varied waters of the midwest. From Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Steelhead Alley in Ohio, Tom and his buddies use innovative big fly designs, Airflo Skagit heads and sink tips loaded on Sage ONE two handed rods to hook and land many steelhead – on the swing!

Flies tied in Skagit Master Volume 4: Two versions of Dave’s Bad Hair day, Hubbard’s Firecracker Leech, The Tube Leech, and Senyo’s Artificial Intelligence.

The Bonus Features section of the DVD presents media from our sponsors: Sage, Simms, Airflo, and Western Rivers Conservancy.

Tom Larimer informed me that there were some cancelations in his class for Sunday after Spey Nation.  This is a great class and these spots won’t last.

Tom Larimer owns and operates Larimer Outfitters out of Hood River, Oregon. He calls the Deschutes River home from the beginning of salmon flies in May until the weather gets too cold to Spey cast in November. His steelhead jet boat camps are legendary. Once the snow flies, Tom’s focus shifts to guiding the winter steelhead rivers of northern Oregon. Depending on the conditions, you might find him floating the Sandy, jet boating on the Clackamas or hiking into the Hood.

Tom has lived and guided in the Oregon since 2001. Before moving to the Northwest, he guided the world famous upper Kenai River in Alaska, the fabled steelhead & trout waters of Northwest Michigan, and the rivers he learned to fly fish on in Wisconsin. His seventeen years of guiding experience have given him a patient and enthusiastic teaching style while on the water or when giving clinics. However, Tom’s passion goes beyond just teaching casting or fishing techniques. He loves to share lessons on the history, the flora and the fauna of his home waters.

Outside of guiding, Tom is one of the most revered Spey casting instructors in the country. He teaches private lessons near his home in Hood River as well as numerous group clinics throughout the country. His teaching style revolves around the family of lines he designed for Airflo Fly Lines. His contributions to the Spey world include the Skagit Compact, the Skagit Switch, the Skagit Intermediate and the Rage Compact.

Finally, Tom is a professional fly tier, photographer, author and hosts trips to some truly amazing fly fishing destinations. Additionally he is a pro-staff member for Simms, Hatch Reels and Solitude Flies. As a man who makes his living from a natural resource, Tom is a steward of the water and her fish. He is a member & supporter of the Native Fish Society, Trout Unlimited and Oregon Water Watch

Burkheimer’s own Nate Koenigsknect, Friend of Spey Nation and former 2 time presenter shows 2 different ways of enticing steelhead to your fly.  Something to keep in mind while never admitting defeat.
