Love when we receive emails like the one we just received from Walt Geryk, the Spey Doctor.

Don’t forget to add Fenwick to the list. I will have them available at my venue this year to go along with Hardy products.

I will have the new fenwick switch and spey rods as well as the new hardy switches as they are being unpackaged as i type. When i find out the sizes i will let you know.

Seele Fly Rods New 10’7″ 8wt

Nov 7, 2014   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Presenter, Spey Nation Supporters  //  Comments Off on Seele Fly Rods New 10’7″ 8wt

As you may or may not be aware, Spey Nation has been growing this year already.  We have added several new companies and Seele Fly Rods may turn out to be the most unique.  The Pennsylvania born company who’s name translates to roughly “Life and Soul” in German has produced a full line of glass spey rods, the newest of which is the 10’7″ 8wt.   Their website claims “In every single Seele Fly Rod you will feel the essence of more than 60 years of experience in fly fishing – built by fly fishers for fly fishers.  The fly rods with soul.”  The best news is that they are 100% made in the USA.  “All Seele Glass and Graphite Fly Rods are built and handcrafted, piece-by-piece, entirely in Bellwood, Pennsylvania, USA”

Michael emailed me this morning with this new clip of the new glass 8wt.

Barney Wong’s Presentation from Spey Nation 2014

Jun 24, 2014   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Presenter  //  Comments Off on Barney Wong’s Presentation from Spey Nation 2014

In case you came in late or missed Spey Nation this year, Barney Wong from Michigan started us off right this year with a great presentation in Scandinavian Casting.  We really appreciate Barney making the trip and helping us celebrate 2 handed casting on the Salmon River in NY!

Barny Wong

IMG_0254Barny Wong possesses neither the qualifications as a guide nor an insider in the fly fishing industry. Rather, he solves problems outside the box while always honing his skill in communicating the unspoken that sticks. As an ex- innovation scout for the automotive industry, and currently in the field of consciousness, he brings new thought and insight into why, what, and how we do things.  Barny’s approach to casting is manage the few so as to produce the largest result. In Tao, this is called Action from Non Action. In this Tao of Casting approach, the ever changing Style in casting can always rely on the immovable Substance (Physics), allowing the caster to self organize and evolve to their highest potential. And with this way, the caster nevers fall into a rut as they harness more with each pass of insight and understanding.

Barny Wong has been spey casting since 2007. He is also featured in both Midcurrent and Fly Fisherman magazine. He combines artistry and technical know how into the art of spey casting.

All levels are welcome for casting classes. His website is www.awholenuthalevel.com containing his rates and contact info.

Barny is committed to your developing the sturdiest casting legs in the shortest amount of time.

Saturday Presentation Schedule

Scandinavian Casting

The presentation will present high speed, high efficiency casting using the greatest leverage possible but one that is highly under utilized thus far: the bending section  underneath the cork. The presentation will touch on what is behind this  cast, what benefit(s) does it provide, and how does it affects your  fishing. The presentation will be introducing some insight as to how to  unleash the spare engine piston you unknowingly have access to but has  been idle up to this point.

10:30 am  Andrew Moy

11:15 am Whitney Gould

Rod Angle and Possition For The Forward Cast

12:00 Lunch

“Taking Control”

regardless of line style or rod length controlling is the only way to become a better Spey caster. Travis will show you from start to finish what helps him and how he took control of his casting not only for fishing but for distance casting.

Effective Spey Casting with Single Hand Rods and Lines

Spey casting is a great tool for single hand rods, not just for two-handers.  Nevertheless, most of us will overhead cast our single handers most of the time and that’s to be expected.  Because of this, it isn’t desirable to make some sort of Frankenline that only works when Spey casting. Our best choice is to have a line that works for us no matter what sort of cast we’re using.
It is possible to make effective Spey casts using just our regular lines that we normally use when casting overhead.  With a few simple casting techniques and some attention to the lines we use, our single hand Spey casts can be very effective and go for distance.  In my presentation, we’ll cover those simple casting techniques needed to make our regular lines Spey cast effectively, plus we will pay close attention to the types of lines that work well and the types that don’t.  Yup, I’ll even use an unsuitable one and make a hash of Spey casting it just to prove that point.
I hope that you will gain from my presentation an appreciation of just how effectively our regular overhead lines can be when Spey cast and that it isn’t necessary to use specialized lines to get the job done.  Just a few simple casting techniques, some attention to our line choices and we’ll be making great Spey casts using just our regular overhead lines.

Peter Charles

Fishing has always been a constant passion for me, starting at the age of six when a neighbour took me and his kids to the side of Grey’s Creek in Cornwall, Ontario, to fish for anything that swam. We kids used long bamboo poles, wooden floats, a thick, green cord for a fishing line and of course, worms.  The catfish we caught went in the frying pan, except for one of mine that ended up in the fire instead, thanks to an overzealous hookset.  Some would say that my fishing habits haven’t changed much since.  🙂

My first fly rod was bought from a department store in 1969 and I’ve been hooked by the sport ever since.  I’ve been in the industry side of things since 2006 as a pro staff member and a sales representative.

I have my Certified Casting Instructor qualification from the Federation of Fly Fishers.

I am on the Canadian field staff for G. Loomis / Shimano and pro staff for Airflo Fly Lines, Simms, and The Canadian Tube Fly Company.

Walt Geryk

One of the premier two-handed spey casting and fly fishing instructors in North America, Walt specializes in targeting salmon, trout and steelhead in the Northeast and offers basic, intermediate and advanced instructions and schools throughout the Great Lakes,  Canada and the East Coast. Beginning  his fly fishing in 1972, Walt has become the leader for marketing traditional fly and spey fishing serving these areas.                Promoting ethical angling, continuing to bring awareness about the outdoors’  fragile eco-system and teaching the proper skills on how to become better fishermen  are just a few things that will be touched on during your day. Since 1985, Walt has been a professional guide and instructor who advocates traditional, catch & release, fly  fishing for the Salmon River Region of New York, the Deerfield River and  others.

Current Distance Spey Cast World Record Holder—Travis Johnson

Travis Johnson began his fly fishing career at the ripe old age of 12. He was that kid who could not learn enough about anything and everything to do with fly fishing.

Travis landed his first Deschutes red-side at age 14 and his first summer steelhead at age 16. His passion for fishing with a fly has taken him all over the country and his wisdom of fishing the western United States surpasses most young men his age.

Having guided the Sandy, Clackamas and the Deschutes Rivers for over 6 years, Travis has learned how to find even the toughest of fish with success, while bringing an infectious energy to the game that will leave you invigorated and inspired.

From a day of chasing wily resident trout to learning in one of his advanced Spey casting classes, your day with this young man will not soon be forgotten.

If you have any questions on the availability of a trip or casting class with Travis Johnson, call The Fly Fishing Shop anytime between 6″00am & 6:00pm at 503-622-4607 or (800) 266-3971. Travis Johnson is both student and instructor in the art of fly casting. He is a member of the prestigious Carron competition Spey Casting team. Last year he placed second at the CLA World Championships held at Blenheim Palace. Winner of the event was Carron team member Gerard Downey, with a magnificent cast of 70.63 meters (231.7 feet). Gerard is now the current World Champion. The team is based out of Invergordon, Ross-shire, Scotland. It has dominated the Spey distance events for the past eleven years and has 12 world Championships to its credit. This team has won more events than all of the rest of the competing teams combined and Carron fly lines hold all of the Spey Casting distance records Most of the 6- members are Scottish. Gerard and Raurri are Irish, and of course Travis resides right here in Oregon, USA. As a matter of fact he grew up in Brightwood, just down the street from The Fly Fishing Shop, where he is currently employed in several capacities, including fishing guide and fly fishing instructor. He practices distance Spey Casting several times a week and regularly achieves casts of 150-200 feet with either hand.   Travis won the 2014 Spey O Rama at San Francinsisco’s prestigous Golden Gate Casting Club with a world record breaking 198 foot cast!

This weeks Spey Nation Week ion review!20140226150730_1961311

1:  We have ordered the Fly Fishing Film Tour tickets and posters.  We are beyond siked about this.  Soon you will be able to add into your spring steelhead trip, a trip to one of our pick-up places, The Tailwater Lodge, Malindas Fly Shop, The Oak Orchard Fly Shop, or All Season’s Sports.

2:  Robin has a review of what happened last Wednesday and Thursday on the Salmon.

3:  We have started to update our list of presentators for June’s Spey Nation Gathering.  We think it’s pretty good.  Some new faces and some returning faces that haven’t been around in a while.

4:  It turned cold again this week.  Seems fishing pressure has been off.  This doesn’t mean the March doldrums have begun, I think that wiser heads are prevailing.  Some fish are still being caught in the DSR.  This is right around the time of year when those first dropbacks begin to show.  It may be early though this year.

5:  I shared this post because I thought it was right on

6:  We have our twitter page active.  You should see it. We have like a million followers

We are beginning to put the list together of presenters.  We start the series off with a new face.  Spey Nation has been a platform for many first time presenters.  I remember the first Spey Nation had 2 first time presenters.  Nervous faces talking to nervous audiences.  Over the years we have been a spring board to some pretty prominent speakers.  It always makes me smile to see them at events across the country.  Not sure if Barney has done any presentations at other spey claves, if not, we have a new first and we are happy to keep the tradition alive.  This truly is a learning environment for all!
