Departure Publishing Supports Spey Fishing In The Great Lakes as well as great indi fishing authors

Jul 9, 2013   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Raffle Prizes  //  Comments Off on Departure Publishing Supports Spey Fishing In The Great Lakes as well as great indi fishing authors

On the table for the raffles at Spey Nation will be two books donated by Departure Publishing.

The first, the Montauk Coffee Table Book “The Blitz”

The Blitz

Over the course of a year, Pete McDonald and Tosh Brown followed an immeasurable biomass of predators and prey on their annual oceanic migration from Maine to North Carolina.

From Casco Bay to The Outer Banks, they shot photographs, burned video footage, and interviewed an eclectic cast of anglers, guides, merchants, and fly tiers. They filled rent cars with sand, they fought ill-mannered dogs in cheap motels, and they boosted convenience store profits in nine different states.

Departure Publishing is proud to present The Blitz, Fly Fishing the Atlantic Migration. Through McDonald’s turn of phrase, and Brown’s eye for imagery, they have created an engaging and comprehensive view of the beaches, tidal rips, birds, bait, and gamefish of the Eastern Seaboard. This is not a how-to-where-to guidebook; it’s an offbeat celebration of the unique and vibrant fly-fishing culture of striped bass, bluefish, tuna, bonito, false albacore, redfish, and other nearshore pelagics.

Joining McDonald and Brown in this collaboration are celebrated East Coast photographers, Dave Skok, Brian Horsley, Sarah Gardner, Jim Levison, Matt Boutet, Sam Talarico, Barry and Cathy Beck, and others.

If you’re partial to crashing surf, panicked baitfish, diving birds, and busting fish, this book is the perfect complement to your fly-fishing collection.

And the second: The Alaska Chronicles

The Alaska Chronicles

On September 20, 2007, Miles Nolte posted the final installment of his summer job memoir on The Drake magazine’s Internet message board. For seventeen weeks, Nolte had used his laptop and a satellite Internet connection to transmit his semi-daily account of what it’s really like to be a fly fishing guide on a remote Alaskan river.

Sitting in his tent above a river packed with migrating salmon and gluttonous trout, he wrote about anglers that he enjoyed guiding and others that he couldn’t wait to get rid of. He described epic fishing days and days of bitter disappointment. He typed about wolves and eagles and beavers and bears. Lots of bears. There were periods of sunny weather and dry flies, followed by stretches of relentless rain, wind, and cold. And beyond the trials that nature doled out, Miles also described how overworked outboards don’t always start, tents sometimes catch fire, and dysfunction often runs rampant among divergent guide and client personalities that are thrust together in a desolate and trying environment.

By the time Miles returned from Alaska, his online musings had attracted a loyal and vicarious following of anglers and guides from around the world. They praised him for his articulate candor, and they thanked him profusely for transporting them with each new post to a place they may have otherwise never reached.

Departure Publishing is proud to present The Alaska Chronicles, a fishing guide’s memoir that originated and evolved in a most unusual manner. If you’ve ever fished Alaska, or if you hope to someday, this book will leave you with an insightful view of the outfitting business and a newfound appreciation for North America’s most pristine and prolific coldwater fishery.

And because I like both Niles and Tosh so much, and because I don’t think it would jeapordize any future dealings with either of them…

Poppy’s Continued Support Humbles

Jul 3, 2013   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Raffle Prizes  //  Comments Off on Poppy’s Continued Support Humbles

Back in the winter of 2008, when Spey Nation was in it’s infancy, I received a call one day from Poppy at the Red Shed Fly Shop in Peck, ID.  Think of it.  A spey fishing legend seeking out some nobody from the great lakes who was hoping to get 10 people to come to a Spey Clave…whatever that was.  Sight unseen, he offered to give us a rod and reel to give away to our members.  “That’s a good idea” I thought, “give away something to our guests at Spey Nation”.  In fact I don’t even think we had a name yet.

Poppy’s quest to get spey rods in the hands of as many fishermen and women as possible has become our quest as well. I wish we could send everyone home with a rod.  And this year he has stepped up to help us do that again.

Poppy at the Red Shed has donated a 7129-4 Echo 3 rod, along with a matching Rage head and floating poly leader

We thank Poppy and all those like him.  Check out what he does for a living in this video

Hardy Marquis #2 Up For Grabs!

Jun 19, 2013   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Raffle Prizes  //  Comments Off on Hardy Marquis #2 Up For Grabs!

You just hafta show up to Spey Nation on July 20th and drop a ticket into the bucket.

Hardy is donating a Marquis Reel #2.  That’s pronounced Marquis…not Marquis.

Since they stopped making the Marquis they had been inundated by requests for its reinstatement. So that’s what they’ve done. This is a new Marquis salmon reel in sizes one, two and three, built to the original design. they’ve made the new reels and spools interchangeable with all the originals because they know exactly what happens. Over the years, a frame gets dropped, buckled or broken. You still have the spools and the lines that you love but without a new reel frame, they’re useless. Not now. You’re back in business. The new reels are all manufactured from high-grade aluminium with the polished silver rim style that everyone agrees is the Marquis at its best. This isn’t quite the original Marquis though. Because they can’t resist improving things they’ve slightly redesigned the internal cam to give an increased range to the click-check.

  • Frame and spools fully interchangeable with the originals
  • All-aluminium frame for strength
  • Polished silver rim for classic look
  • In three sizes to cover every salmon fishing situation

An entire series dedicated to the two-handed caster. With a medium-fast action, the rods have enough power to cast the heaviest of tips and flies necessary to get into the zone of winter-run fish. Trout anglers will be pleasantly surprised with the fish-ability of the lighter switch models and their ability to cast streamers with two hands or heavy nymph rigs single-handed. The longer switch models offer the same versatility for salmon and steelhead anglers who enjoy the benefits of both single and double-handed casting.

  • Medium-Fast Action
  • Two-handed rod series with offerings in both heavy and lighter weights
  • Red.Core construction for added power and durability
  • Suggested line grain weights are included on all rod decals
  • Custom cork handles with composite cork trim
  • Alignment dots for easy rod set up
  • Satin black reel seat
  • Durable black cordura rod tube
  • High quality black suede rod bag
  • Lifetime Warranty

Guess where you can see and win a 13 foot 6 inch 8wt version of this rocket launcher?  That’s right, Spey Nation.
