As Spey Nation 2015 moves on to about 9:15am on June 27th, one of the major business partners of one of newest companies to join the Spey Nation family Seele Fly Rods will take front and center of our little natural amphitheater space. Specifially exciting is their full line of fiberglass switch and spey rods. Can’t wait to wiggle them
Recognized internationally as an outstanding fly caster, Michael was born and raised in Germany and caught his first fish at age six in a small stream in Bavaria. In 1983, at age 12, he first devoted himself entirely to every facet of the sport of fly fishing.
Since 1998, Michael has participated in international shows and conducted single- and double-hand casting workshops around the globe. As a professional fly-fisher, he has guided throughout Europe and the United States. Welcoming new challenges, he continuously hones his skills while – at the same time – coming up with new designs for his own products just as he long did for equipment offered by leading firms in the fly-fishing industry.
Michael is an innovator in all aspects of fly fishing and his years of martial-arts training allowed him to create the Effective Fly Casting Technique, or EFCT, based on natural movement, which is easy to learn – whether for a beginner, novice, or seasoned casting veteran.
Michael’s life is all things fly fishing; he even met his wife Emily at a Fly Fishing Show! But put him in his element – on the waters of the world – and he becomes one with nature, just like when he was six years old in Bavaria.
Don’t miss an opportunity at shows or otherwise to join one of the most respected instructors in fly fishing and casting including all aspects of single-handed and double-handed spey casting and overhead casting.
In 2013, Michael and Mike McFarland teamed up to form a new rod company. Seele Fly Rods (pronounced zay-luh) based in Bellwood, Pennsylvania, USA. Seele offers, worldwide, high-end graphite and fiberglass fly rods, including Spey and switch rods. All Seele fly rods are entirely built and handcrafted, piece-by-piece, in Bellwood.
Spey Nation 2015 kicks off this Saturday Morning at 8:30 am with a great presentation by our good friend and perennial favorite Walt Geryk.
One of the premier two-handed spey casting and fly fishing instructors in North America, Walt specializes in targeting salmon, trout and steelhead in the Northeast and offers basic, intermediate and advanced instructions and schools throughout the Great Lakes, Canada and the East Coast.
Beginning his fly fishing in 1972, Walt has excelled in becoming a leader in marketing traditional fly and spey fishing serving these areas. Promoting ethical angling, continuing to bring awareness about the outdoors’ fragile eco-system and teaching the proper skills on how to become better fishermen are just a few things that will be touched on during your day.
Since 1985, Walt has been a professional guide and instructor who advocates traditional, catch & release, fly fishing for the Salmon River Region of New York, the Deerfield River and others. Those who have spent time with Walt have found that he possess a unique and descriptive way in teaching which allows for easy understanding while furthering the enjoyment of spey casting and fishing.
Being the premier spey casting and fishing instructor, seasoned fishing coach and guide on these waters requires continuous work and dedication. Walt brings to the water each day his in depth knowledge and enthusiasm which enables you to become better fly fishers. These are just a few attributes why Walt is recognized to be one of the best in the sport today.
“Take the opportunity to learn and spey fish with Walt, North America’s Hardy Fly Fishing Ambassador .
You’ll leave the water a better spey caster and enjoy fly fishing with confidence.”
Walt is also the coordinator for Deerfield River Spey Day, the annual charity event to benefit cancer survivors, which he founded in 2009. Throughout the year Walt can be seen swinging a fly most anywhere in North America. During March thru May and again from September thru December, Walt is instructing and offers coached fly fishing trips in the Salmon River Region of upstate New York for salmon, trout and steelhead. From May into late August he is wading the Deerfield and Westfield Rivers of Western Massachusetts for rainbow, brook and brown trout. A June thru July trip to New Brunswick for Atlantic Salmon is where he will be hosting coached fly fishing trips, casting schools, lessons and clinics all on the Fabled Miramichi River Region.

I told this story before about our friend Lee Davison and you can read about how excited we are to have him back here. But there is more to the story. Lee took first in his division at the annual Jimmy Green Spey O Rama Spey Casting Championship held at the Golden Gate Casting Club in San Francisco. With a monumental single spey cast off his right hand of 146 feet (Which would have sailed across the parking lot in Pineville from the river) he now joins the growing number of spey casting champions who have appeared at Spey Nation. If you remember, Whitney and Travis won their respective divisions last year. In fact, Spey Nation presenters have won all categories within the last 2 years. We can’t wait to hang out with our friend from Idaho. You need to make a point of stopping by his booth and checking out his signature lines, Ballistic Spey Lines on your sticks. I am sure you will find a pure magical match. You’ll also find a few of his lines on display at the raffle tables so take your chances to win your own!
More on Lee:
Lee is the designer/owner of the Ballistic Speyline Products; CEO of Snake River Outfitters; Snowbee UK distributor for USA; an international Spey Casting competitor; and ex-officio President of the Federation of Flyfishers Western Rocky Mountain Council. Also, IFFF Certified Master Casting Instructor, IFFF Certified Two-Hand Casting Instructor, and a licensed Idaho guide, Lee combines both a calming patience and an infectious enthusiasm for teaching single hand or Spey casting techniques, building confidence and skill in his students.
Continuing the Spey Nation success of attracting world class spey casting champions, we are so excited to have Mia Sheppard presenting at this year’s event. Mia is the epitome of a Steelhead guide and co-owns Little Creek Outfitters with her husband Marty. Come on out and see what promises to be a wealth of knowledge about spey casting and spey fishing. We hope to put our best foot forward as we show Mia around our fishery as well.
I live and breathe being on the water. My passion to share this with others has inspired me to become a proficient angler, teacher of fly-fishing, advocate for new anglers and kids in the sport and supporter of conservation. In 2001 Marty Sheppard (my rod caddy and wonderful husband) introduced me to spey casting, and connecting with steelhead. This has led me down a path of sleeping in garages, wearing leaky waders, becoming a two time distance casting champion, currently holding the record for womens longest cast at 144 feet. together we own Little Creek Outfitters, guiding steelhead trips on Oregon rivers and I work for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership as the Oregon Field Representative. Never off duty, I love chasing chukar with my Pudelpointer and being a mother to our beautiful daughter Tegan.
In the past few years and with the explosion of tools to spey fish trout with, eastern trout fisherman have been getting creative. And what better backdrop to brain storm in, than the famous streams and tailwaters of the Catskills. We also have the perfect base camp. Supporter The West Branch Angler Resort. They have donated
2 nights on the West Branch of the Delaware River in a Grandview Cabin Party of 2.
Dates 7/1/15 — 12/31/15
In Keeping with the trend this year of adding a new company to Spey Nation 2015, I present to you Saracione Reel Company. Classic Styling S handled reels made one at a time.
At Saracione’s we are constantly trying to improve our products and services. Since we are a small manufacturer dedicated to producing only the finest quality reels humanly possible, we are limiting our production to concentrate entirely on quality, not quantity. Due to our limited production we are not selling our products through fly fishing retail stores. All Saracione products are available to you on a factory direct basis only, and we promise to take good care of you. We will continue to improve this website to make purchasing from us as simple as possible. We are also adding a selection of premium products that are our choice as the industries best, so that we can completely outfit you with the tackle you need for your next fly fishing adventure.
Thank you for your loyalty, and we look forward to providing you with the finest state-of-the art fly reels money can buy. Joe Saracione

Back when Spey Nation was an idea, in fact I don’t think we had come up with the name yet, I received a phone call from Peck, ID. The voice on the other line asked if we could use a donation to help support our clave. Of course we accepted and a short time later I recieved a package in the mail, which we promptly gave away at our first gathering. Since 2008, Poppy has come through every year outfitting one of us with a lot of spey equipment. The Red Shed Fly Shop is the exclusive dealer for Gaelforce Lines So, since he has something to talk about and promote, this year to join our festivities.
Poppy came out to Spey Nation last year for the first time and he and Mrs. Red Shed must have liked what they saw because they are planning the cross country drive again to answer all you questions. Can’t wait to see our friends again!
In case you missed the video,
Poppy is also donating an Abel Spey reel
