Feb 20, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Supporters  //  Comments Off on Vision and Reelflies Joins Spey Nation 2015

They haven’t been able to make an appearance every year but they are always a hit when they make it to the water.  Vision in Fly Fishing  always has an innovative and large array of 2 handed fly rods available to us and this year will be no exception when Mike Wencel, the Eastern Canada Vision and Reelflies.ca rep joins us.  You will also be able to talk to Mike about giving you a one on one casting demo with the full line of Vision products.

Don’t know much about the Vision stuff?  You probably should.  With names like “Cult” and “Catapult” you might just want to spend a bit of your day over at Mikes booth talking to him about what this Swedish Company has to offer.

Also appearing in Mike’s booth will be Reel Flies.  A Canadian Company with a full array of Atlantic Salmon and Steelhead flies.

Jan 29, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Presenter  //  Comments Off on Will Turek Bringing a Mid- Western Flavor to Spey Nation

There’s no doubt that the mid-west has seen a good deal of play in the swinging fly world in the last couple of years. The aptly named Steelhead Alley and beyond does get it’s glut of steelhead running the rivers all fall and winter long. Since the beginning of Spey Nation, we have had a contingent of mid-west road trippers to come for the day and anybody who has witnessed them can agree that their waders never dry out.   This year we are pleased to include Will Turek in our distinguished list of presenters.   I think everybody will agree that Will’s obsession with everything Spey is contagious.

Will Turek

WillWill Turek was born and raised in NE Ohio and has been professionally employed in the Fly Fishing industry since 1995.

In addition, he designed educational and sales presentations for continuing professional development of manufacturer’s dealers, sales reps, and pro-staff.

In 2008, Will joined Greg Senyo’s Steelhead Alley Outfitters as their Spey specialist with a focus on education and single person swung fly guided trips.

Michael Mauri to present at Spey Nation 2015

Jan 27, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo, Spey Nation Presenter  //  Comments Off on Michael Mauri to present at Spey Nation 2015

If there is one thing I am excited about to see at Spey Nation this year, it’s the appearance of a true lineup of glass 2 handers.  We’re not just talking about 1 or 2 but full line-ups of whippy sticks running around the boat launch parking lot.  Michael Mauri, Co-owner of Seele Fly Rods, contacted us this year and has committed to have his Zeitlos Switch and Spey Rods  lined up and ready for action.  Also being a talented caster of all things 2 handed, Michael will also be giving a great presentation on single & double hand spey casting.

Michael Mauri

Michael MauriRecognized internationally as an outstanding fly caster, Michael was born and raised in Germany and caught his first fish at age six in a small stream in Bavaria. In 1983, at age 12, he first devoted himself entirely to every facet of the sport of fly fishing.

Since 1998, Michael has participated in international shows and conducted single- and double-hand casting workshops around the globe. As a professional fly-fisher, he has guided throughout Europe and the United States. Welcoming new challenges, he continuously hones his skills while – at the same time – coming up with new designs for his own products just as he long did for equipment offered by leading firms in the fly-fishing industry.

Michael is an innovator in all aspects of fly fishing and his years of martial-arts training allowed him to create the Effective Fly Casting Technique, or EFCT, based on natural movement, which is easy to learn – whether for a beginner, novice, or seasoned casting veteran.

Michael’s life is all things fly fishing; he even met his wife Emily at a Fly Fishing Show! But put him in his element – on the waters of the world – and he becomes one with nature, just like when he was six years old in Bavaria.

Don’t miss an opportunity at shows or otherwise to join one of the most respected instructors in fly fishing and casting including all aspects of single-handed and double-handed spey casting and overhead casting.

In 2013, Michael and Mike McFarland teamed up to form a new rod company. Seele Fly Rods (pronounced zay-luh) based in Bellwood, Pennsylvania, USA. Seele offers, worldwide, high-end graphite and fiberglass fly rods, including Spey and switch rods. All Seele fly rods are entirely built and handcrafted, piece-by-piece, in Bellwood.

travisTravis Johnson began his fly fishing career at the ripe old age of 12. He was that kid who could not learn enough about anything and everything to do with fly fishing.

Travis landed his first Deschutes red-side at age 14 and his first summer steelhead at age 16. His passion for fishing with a fly has taken him all over the country and his wisdom of fishing the western United States surpasses most young men his age.

Having guided the Sandy, Clackamas and the Deschutes Rivers for over 7 years, Travis has learned how to find even the toughest of fish with success, while bringing an infectious energy to the game that will leave you invigorated and inspired.

From a day of chasing wily resident trout to learning in one of his advanced Spey casting classes, your day with this young man will not soon be forgotten.  Follow Travis through his blog Steelhead Chaser.

If you have any questions on the availability of a trip or casting class with Travis Johnson, call 541-591-3936.

Travis Johnson is both student and instructor in the art of fly casting. He is a member of the prestigious Carron competition Spey Casting team. Last year he placed second at the CLA World Championships held at Blenheim Palace.  He practices distance Spey Casting several times a week and regularly achieves casts of 150-200 feet with either hand. Oregon Guide and Spey Casting Champion Mia Sheppard will be appearing at Spey Nation 2015.  We are proud to continuously attract world champion spey casters to our little corner of the third coast.  She’s a 2 time Spey O Rama Champion, holds the world record distance cast and we have had nothing but great conversations on the phone.    Mia along with her Husband Marty also owns Little Creek Outfitters in Oregon and guides on the Clackamas, Grande Ronde, Deschutes, John Day, and Sandy Rivers.  I think it goes without saying that Mia has a passion for Steelhead and that will certainly come through in her presentation.

Mia Sheppard

I live and breathe being on the water.  My passion to share this with others has inspired me to become a proficient angler, teacher of fly-fishing, advocate for new anglers and kids in the sport and supporter of conservation.  In 2001 Marty Sheppard (my rod caddy and wonderful husband) introduced me to spey casting, and connecting with steelhead. This has led me down a path of sleeping in garages, wearing leaky waders, becoming a two time distance casting champion,  currently holding the record for womens longest cast at 144 feet. together we own Little Creek Outfitters, guiding steelhead trips on Oregon rivers and I work for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership as the Oregon Field Representative.  Never off duty, I love chasing chukar with my Pudelpointer and being a mother to our beautiful daughter Tegan.

Casting Demo- Tips to lengthen your cast  – Gain distance with your cast by proper rod alignment and  body mechanics

For a person that stands 5’2 you probable wonder how I can make a 145 foot cast with a 15’ double handed rod.  Mia will talk about anchor placement, proper hand and body alignment and remembering to breath.

Mia will also be available for casting lessons on Sunday after Spey Nation June 28, 2015.  Please contact her  at (541) 419-2105 or msheppard@trcp.org to secure a spot.  The class is limited to 6 people and is $150.

Spey Nation welcomes back an old friend. Snake River Outfitters and Ballistic Spey Lines

In 2008, when Spey Nation probably didn’t even have a name and definitely had no business attracting talent and companies from Idaho, Lee Davison (Owner of Ballistic Spey Lines and Snake River Outfitters) made the trip.  He even came back for Spey Nation 2009.  After a long hiatus, Lee is traveling back and will be displaying his popular Vector and Ballistic Spey Lines, as well as a new line of competition lines he was telling me about on the phone last night.  Lee will also be presenting at the event during the day.  We are so happy to have him confirmed at Spey Nation.  Chances are the rods in your quiver haven’t had the pleasure of launching one of Lee’s lines.  I highly recommend that you make it a point to check them out.

A bit about Lee Davison:

Lee is the designer/owner of the Ballistic Speyline Products; CEO of Snake River Outfitters; Snowbee UK distributor for USA; an international Spey Casting competitor; and ex-officio President of the Federation of Flyfishers Western Rocky Mountain Council. Also, IFFF Certified Master Casting Instructor, IFFF Certified Two-Hand Casting Instructor, and a licensed Idaho guide, Lee combines both a calming patience and an infectious enthusiasm for teaching single hand or Spey casting techniques, building confidence and skill in his students. Lee
