Casting from tight quarters by Jeff Mishler – Video

Jul 10, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo  //  Comments Off on Casting from tight quarters by Jeff Mishler – Video

Skagit Master’s Jeff Mishler lays it all out there for those of us using switches in tight quarters.  Great casting reminders for the new trout spey rods popping up all over the place as many of the trout rivers and streams are smaller than their steelhead river counterparts and wading them may spook many of the residents so we spend our time in the bushes.

Tying the Ho Bo Spey Fly

Jul 9, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Fly Tying, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo  //  Comments Off on Tying the Ho Bo Spey Fly

A popular fall and winter steelhead fly for our waters is the Ho Bo Spey Fly.   The Ho Bo Spey has great movement and can be tide in any color to match any situation.   Playing with the thickness of the materials can also be played with to match the clarity of the water.   I like this version of black and blue with the orange accents for darker days.

Right about now Travis Johnson’s Plane should be arriving.   He’s the 3:00pm presentation for the Spey Nation on June 27th.  Last year at the annual world spey casting championships in San Francisco Spey O Rama, he launched a world record distance cast that hasn’t landed yet.  He’s one of the most powerful spey casters I’ve ever met and you need to watch his presentation.  He’s also a become a good friend over the last few years coming all the way out from Oregon to show us third coasters how it’s done.  He likes it so much that he leaves the native land of steelhead every fall to fish with us on the Salmon.   So let’s make him feel as welcome as he has made us.

travisTravis Johnson began his fly fishing career at the ripe old age of 12. He was that kid who could not learn enough about anything and everything to do with fly fishing.

Travis landed his first Deschutes red-side at age 14 and his first summer steelhead at age 16. His passion for fishing with a fly has taken him all over the country and his wisdom of fishing the western United States surpasses most young men his age.

Having guided the Sandy, Clackamas and the Deschutes Rivers for over 7 years, Travis has learned how to find even the toughest of fish with success, while bringing an infectious energy to the game that will leave you invigorated and inspired.

From a day of chasing wily resident trout to learning in one of his advanced Spey casting classes, your day with this young man will not soon be forgotten.  Follow Travis through his blog Steelhead Chaser.

If you have any questions on the availability of a trip or casting class with Travis Johnson, call 541-591-3936.

Travis Johnson is both student and instructor in the art of fly casting. He is a member of the prestigious Carron competition Spey Casting team. Last year he placed second at the CLA World Championships held at Blenheim Palace.  He practices distance Spey Casting several times a week and regularly achieves casts of 150-200 feet with either hand. Travis won the 2014 Spey O Rama at San Francisco’s prestigious Golden Gate Casting Club with a world record breaking 198 foot cast!

Win a trip for 2 to the Kenai River in Alaska with Roehard Guide Service!  The Kenai River in Alaska is known for big. Big water, Big Kings, and Big Rainbows. The Rainbows are biggest in September and you may be there to intercept some of those zeppelins.
IMG_5916-1024x1024The trip will be for three days in September of 2016 on the Kenai River for rainbows, and if conditions are right we will spend a day or two down on one of the Kenai Peninsula rivers chasing steelhead fresh out of the ocean. The winner will just have to have their dates figured out by at least May 1st of next year.  *****Travel and Lodging Not Included**** Winner will have to get here and have their lodging arranged. The winners could fly into Anchorage (Ted Stevens International Airport). The best place to stay would be down in Soldotna, or the Sterling area.

About our new supporter of Spey Nation!  Guide Christopher Tobias grew up fishing for salmon, trout, and Great Lakes steelhead JerBowon the Eastern end of Lake Ontario in central New York. From a young age, Christopher was wading around the many Lake Ontario tributaries in pursuit of the finned creatures that inhabit the flowing waters starting in the late Fall. After seeing pictures of Alaska, Christopher knew that one day he would find himself there.

Those pictures eventually became a reality and Christopher and his family found themselves migrating to Alaska. Christopher and his family reside in Wasilla where they base their business, Roe Hard Guide Service, out of. This provides a unique opportunity for Christopher to be able to guide on the many rivers and creeks to the North of Anchorage, as well as South on the Kenai Peninsula.

For more information about Chris and his guide service in Alaska please visit his website:

A little more about this trip from Chris

September is a great time for big bows on the Kenai. Next year will be a great year since it will be a pink run on the Kenai. Lots of flesh and food in the water. It tends to bring out the big boys from the depths of the lake.
Depending on where the winner and his group are flying out of, they can find decent priced flights into Anchorage with limited connections. They can bring their own gear if they want. I will have extra spey rods, all the flies they will need, and some single hand rods to use while we move between runs.
The Kenai River Lodge is right next to the river in Soldotna, and is decently priced.
If they want something a little more “Alaskan”, they can check out the Moose River Resort.
The winner and his group can purchase their license and print it right online.
I hope you guys have a great turn out this year. It seems to just keep getting larger and larger every year.

Spey Nation Presenter Profile Lee Davison

LeeI told this story before about our friend Lee Davison and you can read about how excited we are to have him back here.  But there is more to the story.   Lee took first in his division at the annual Jimmy Green Spey O Rama Spey Casting Championship held at the Golden Gate Casting Club in San Francisco.   With a monumental single spey cast off his right hand of 146 feet (Which would have sailed across the parking lot in Pineville from the river) he now joins the growing number of spey casting champions who have appeared at Spey Nation.  If you remember, Whitney and Travis won their respective divisions last year.  In fact, Spey Nation presenters have won all categories within the last 2 years.  We can’t wait to hang out with our friend from Idaho.  You need to make a point of stopping by his booth and checking out his signature lines, Ballistic Spey Lines on your sticks.  I am sure you will find a pure magical match.  You’ll also find a few of his lines on display at the raffle tables so take your chances to win your own!

More on Lee:

Lee is the designer/owner of the Ballistic Speyline Products; CEO of Snake River Outfitters; Snowbee UK distributor for USA; an international Spey Casting competitor; and ex-officio President of the Federation of Flyfishers Western Rocky Mountain Council. Also, IFFF Certified Master Casting Instructor, IFFF Certified Two-Hand Casting Instructor, and a licensed Idaho guide, Lee combines both a calming patience and an infectious enthusiasm for teaching single hand or Spey casting techniques, building confidence and skill in his students.

This has led me down a path of sleeping in garages, wearing leaky waders, becoming a two time distance casting champion,  currently holding the record for womens longest cast at 144 feet. together we own Little Creek Outfitters, guiding steelhead trips on Oregon rivers and I work for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership as the Oregon Field Representative.  Never off duty, I love chasing chukar with my Pudelpointer and being a mother to our beautiful daughter Tegan.
