A Heartfelt Thank You From All Of Us At Spey Nation

A Message of Thanks From Spey Nation

It is My Great Pleasure, to be writing to you on behalf of the team of volunteers that make our Spey Nation Gathering on the banks of our beloved Salmon River in Upstate, NY possible.   Please accept our most heartfelt thank you as without you, the manufacturers, representatives, presenters, and Spey Nation guests, we would not have the success we have enjoyed over the past 8 years. With your help and generosity of both time, money, and equipment donated, you have ensured the continuation of our work by fully funding Spey Nation IX as well as allowing us to make another sizable annual donation to the Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Club.  As you know, making our fishery a better place for all and restoring native fish populations in Upstate NY are our primary objectives.  I hope you had as much fun as we did over the course of the weekend and I am looking forward to seeing you all next year for Spey Nation IX!

Sincerely,

Spey Nation!

This is a bit long to watch while your boss might walk in on you but the scenery alone is worth the watch.

Casting from tight quarters by Jeff Mishler – Video

Jul 10, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo  //  Comments Off on Casting from tight quarters by Jeff Mishler – Video

Skagit Master’s Jeff Mishler lays it all out there for those of us using switches in tight quarters.  Great casting reminders for the new trout spey rods popping up all over the place as many of the trout rivers and streams are smaller than their steelhead river counterparts and wading them may spook many of the residents so we spend our time in the bushes.

Tying the Ho Bo Spey Fly

Jul 9, 2015   //   by Geoff Schaake   //   Cack Handed, Fly Tying, Like Minded Mofos, Mojo  //  Comments Off on Tying the Ho Bo Spey Fly

A popular fall and winter steelhead fly for our waters is the Ho Bo Spey Fly.   The Ho Bo Spey has great movement and can be tide in any color to match any situation.   Playing with the thickness of the materials can also be played with to match the clarity of the water.   I like this version of black and blue with the orange accents for darker days.

Spey Nation 2015 Presenter Profile: Travis Johnson

Right about now Travis Johnson’s Plane should be arriving.   He’s the 3:00pm presentation for the Spey Nation on June 27th.  Last year at the annual world spey casting championships in San Francisco Spey O Rama, he launched a world record distance cast that hasn’t landed yet.  He’s one of the most powerful spey casters I’ve ever met and you need to watch his presentation.  He’s also a become a good friend over the last few years coming all the way out from Oregon to show us third coasters how it’s done.  He likes it so much that he leaves the native land of steelhead every fall to fish with us on the Salmon.   So let’s make him feel as welcome as he has made us.

travisTravis Johnson began his fly fishing career at the ripe old age of 12. He was that kid who could not learn enough about anything and everything to do with fly fishing.

Travis landed his first Deschutes red-side at age 14 and his first summer steelhead at age 16. His passion for fishing with a fly has taken him all over the country and his wisdom of fishing the western United States surpasses most young men his age.

Having guided the Sandy, Clackamas and the Deschutes Rivers for over 7 years, Travis has learned how to find even the toughest of fish with success, while bringing an infectious energy to the game that will leave you invigorated and inspired.

From a day of chasing wily resident trout to learning in one of his advanced Spey casting classes, your day with this young man will not soon be forgotten.  Follow Travis through his blog Steelhead Chaser.

If you have any questions on the availability of a trip or casting class with Travis Johnson, call 541-591-3936.

Travis Johnson is both student and instructor in the art of fly casting. He is a member of the prestigious Carron competition Spey Casting team. Last year he placed second at the CLA World Championships held at Blenheim Palace.  He practices distance Spey Casting several times a week and regularly achieves casts of 150-200 feet with either hand. Travis won the 2014 Spey O Rama at San Francisco’s prestigious Golden Gate Casting Club with a world record breaking 198 foot cast!

Continuing the Spey Nation success of attracting world class spey casting champions, we are so excited to have Mia Sheppard presenting at this year’s event.  Mia is the epitome of a Steelhead guide and co-owns Little Creek Outfitters with her husband Marty.  Come on out and see what promises to be a wealth of knowledge about spey casting and spey fishing.   We hope to put our best foot forward as we show Mia around our fishery as well.

Mia Sheppard

Mia_SheppardI live and breathe being on the water.  My passion to share this with others has inspired me to become a proficient angler, teacher of fly-fishing, advocate for new anglers and kids in the sport and supporter of conservation.  In 2001 Marty Sheppard (my rod caddy and wonderful husband) introduced me to spey casting, and connecting with steelhead. This has led me down a path of sleeping in garages, wearing leaky waders, becoming a two time distance casting champion,  currently holding the record for womens longest cast at 144 feet. together we own Little Creek Outfitters, guiding steelhead trips on Oregon rivers and I work for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership as the Oregon Field Representative.  Never off duty, I love chasing chukar with my Pudelpointer and being a mother to our beautiful daughter Tegan.

I tell this story all the time about Poppy

Back when Spey Nation was an idea, in fact I don’t think we had come up with the name yet, I received a phone call from Peck, ID.  The voice on the other line asked if we could use a donation to help support our clave.  Of course we accepted and a short time later I recieved a package in the mail, which we promptly gave away at our first gathering.  Since 2008, Poppy has come through every year outfitting one of us with a lot of spey equipment.  The Red Shed Fly Shop is the exclusive dealer for Gaelforce Lines   So, since he has something to talk about and promote, this year to join our festivities.

Poppy came out to Spey Nation last year for the first time and he and Mrs. Red Shed must have liked what they saw because they are planning the cross country drive again to answer all you questions.   Can’t wait to see our friends again!

In case you missed the video,

Poppy is also donating an Abel Spey reel

Donated By The Red Shed Fly Shop Peck, ID   The reel will come with a Gaelforce Line
